Fancy Words

Sequence Shot- A long take that usually employs sophisticated camera movement. It also referred to by the French term "plan-sequence". Examples to look up are the opening sequence in Orson Well's "Touch of Evil" (1958); Martin Scorcese's "Goodfellas"(1990) sequence when Ray Liotta takes his date from the street outside the club and through the restaurant kitchen to a special dining table in the club; the opening sequence in Robert Altman's "The Player"(1993); or Quenton Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction"(1994) where he follows Bruce Willis from his car, past an apartment building (where someone’s radio mentions Jack Rabbit Slim’s), and through an empty lot to his apartment.

Doughnut- A circular piece of foam rubber that fits snugly between the lens and sunshade on the camera. Doesn't taste very good though.

I had heard about the BBC series "Sherlock" but hadn't seen any of it until this past weekend. Thank you Netflix! It is a modern day version of Sherlock Holmes. Yes, that has been done in the past and always very badly. I was amazed and surprised by this recent incarnation. It's remarkably good and just weird enough to keep us guessing. Benedict Cumberbatch (is that a Harry Potter mane or what?) portrays the self-described "consulting detective" Sherlock Holmes. He's given up smoking and other unmentioned addictions. Of course, he wears four nicotine patches at a time and has not given up his true addiction...crime solving. The production value and writing are top notch. The most fascinating character though is Jim Moriarty, played by Andrew Scott. Those of us who have read the Arther Conan Doyle stories about Holmes know Moriarty as an evil genius who pulls strings and doesn't get his hands dirty. Not Jim Moriarty. He is a brilliant, unpredictable and utter psychopathic maniac! Andrew Scott shines in this show even above the excellent performances of Cumberbatch and co-star Martin Freeman (as Dr. Watson). Moriarty scares the crap out of the Holmes, Watson and the television audience. "Sherlock" is a must see.

Update 2/8/13: Interestingly enough, it was just announced that Cumberbatch is playing the villain in the new J.J. Abrams "Star Trek: Into Darkness"

Pick of the Week

Classified X (1998)- A documentary tracing the history of stereotypical portrayal of African Americans in the movies. Written and narrated by writer/director/actor Melvin Van Peebles. Van Peebles is best know for his groundbreaking 1971 film "Sweet Sweetback's Bad Asssss Song". Yes, the title is spelled that way. "Sweetback" broke the mold of stereotyped and assimilated black Americans in the cinema. His characters spoke like the people in the streets of the 1970's. They were strong, defiant and sexual. We will get back to that film in another posting. Classified X is entertaining and edged by the delivery of Van Peebles. He also wrote but did not direct this fascinating look into mirror for us all.
